Silver Medal for Penitentiary Social Merit 2010

For the contribution made to improve the inmates’ lives and the quality of the penitentiary system.

On Friday, 24 September, Interior Minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba and the General Secretary of Penitentiary Institutions chaired the award ceremony on the occasion of the feast of “ Nuestra Señora de La Merced”, patroness of the Penitentiary Institution.

These awards are given to officials for their outstanding work, and other persons, entities and institutions that collaborate with the prison administration.

This year, the Medal of Penitentiary Social Merit has been delivered to various people and entities that from different fields have contributed to improve the inmates’ lives and the quality of the system.

Tomillo Foundation currently carries out four projects in penitentiary institutions:

  • The project “Oxygen”: Provides training in gardening and environment to inmates of four penitentiary centers: Navalcarnero, Aranjuez, Alcalá and Algeciras. It lasts one-year and includes a maximum of 20 students per center.
  • Youth, Self-employment and Prison: Specific program of socio-labor training, aiming at preparing them for self-employment and entrepreneurship at the Victoria Kent center with 21 people oriented / trained in 2009.
  • Work Orientation and social skills program for inmates of the young module about to obtain the third penitentiary degree, in the Madrid VI Penitentiary Center of Aranjuez, where we annually attend about 60 young people.
  • Training on Care of Dependent Persons for 15 inmates of the Penitentiary Center of Navalcarnero.
