We celebrate the XVI Tomillo Foundation Ham Cutting Competition

Ireidy Aponte, student of the Tomillo Foundation, winner of the 1st. Prize in the 16th edition of the Tomillo Foundation Ham Cutting Contest, among Madrid’s Hotel and Catering Schools.

Today, Friday, April 21, we have celebrated the XVI Ham Cutting Contest of Fundación Tomillo, in which 18 students from 9Educational Centersof the Basic Vocational Training in Cooking and Catering of the Community of Madrid have competed for the best cut.

The competition, organized since 2006, seeks to improve students’ professional and personal skills, such as self-confidence, self-esteem, teamwork, results orientation and communication. Living a real experience -methodology known as learning by doing- is a great incentive in the training of young people, accelerating their learning process by facing real work and competition situations.

Students of Basic Vocational Training from 9 schoolsin the Community of Madrid participated in the contest:

  • IES Cortes de Cádiz.
  • School of Hotel Management and Tourism of Madrid.
  • School of Hotel Management of Alcalá de Henares.
  • Simone Ortega School of Hotel Management.
  • María Zayas School of Hotel Management.
  • CEPA Cid Campeador.
  • Hipatia School of Hotel Management.
  • IES Pedro de Tolosa.
  • Tomillo Foundation School of Hotel Management.

The jury was made up of professionals of great prestige in the hospitality industry:

  • Jorge Sánchez Arroyo, professional slicer and manager of the establishment Mercado Jamón Ibérico.
  • Sonia Vilavendrell Freixas, representative of Zamora Company.
  • Antonio Gálvez, professional cutter and manager of Los Granainos Restaurant.
  • Eduardo Fernández, product development technician for the Alsea group.
  • Albert Mir, product development technician for the Alsea group.

The winners of this edition were:

  • 1st Prize: Ireidy Aponte, student of the Tomillo Foundation School of Hotel Management.
  • 2nd Prize: Rocío Ortega, student of the Escuela Superior de Hostelería y Turismo de Madrid.
  • 3rd Prize: José María Fernández from the Escuela de Hostelería de Alcalá de Henares.

More than 50 people attended the event, including teachers, students, professionals and collaborators, creating a meeting place with other educational centers and representatives of the hospitality industry, which contributes to broadening the knowledge of young people.
